This Minimalist House Hides an Entire World Inside Its Walls

This Minimalist House Hides an Entire World Inside Its Walls Architects: Takeshi Hosaka Architects Area: 470 m² Year: 2014 Site: 470.60 sqm Building Area: 233.84 sqm Floor Area Ratio: 187.67 sqm Photographs: KOJI FUJII / Nacasa&Pertners Inc. Location: Nagoya, Japan The Nagoya Courthouse by Takeshi Hosaka Architects is a single-story residence in Nagoya that responds thoughtfully to its dense urban surroundings and humid climate. Designed as an inward-looking home, it features a central courtyard that becomes the heart of daily life, while minimal exterior openings ensure privacy from nearby buildings and streets. Elevated slightly above ground level to address flooding risks, the house uses layered thresholds—blurring the line between indoor and outdoor spaces—through shifting roof forms, glass walls, and semi-open areas. Natural materials and passive design strategies further enhance comfort, resulting in a calm, introspective living environment that balances protection, openness, and a close connection to nature.
