8. The Wreck of the SS Kamloops & Old Whitey | Tales of the Great Lakes

On the eighth episode of Tales of the Great Lakes, I delve into another Lake Superior shipwreck with some chilling lore surrounding it. Many who bring up Great Lakes shipwrecks now, talk about a diver's rite of passage on the shipwreck of the SS Kamloops. This rite of passage involves diving on the shipwreck and shaking the hand of the man in the engine room, and divers have nicknamed this man "Old Whitey." Some who have dove on the SS Kamloops, say that Old Whitey has followed them around the ship. This isn't just a ghostly tale, though, there is tons of history behind the Kamloops and the 21 people that fell with it. Including an amazing tale of how one of the ship workers, a woman named Alice Bettridge, threw a bottle into Lake Superior before she perished. That bottle would traverse 150 miles of Lake Superior water and fall into the hands of a Canadian trapper and guide named Louis Coutu.
