9. The Dark History of Mission Point on Mackinac Island, Part One | Tales of the Great Lakes

In the ninth Tales of the Great Lakes, I tell the early dark history of Mission Point on Mackinac Island. This documentary covers the pre-colonial history, colonial history, and 19th century history of Mackinac Island (more focusing on the Mission Point side) when there was a Native American Boarding School on the island. In this history, I investigate how Anglo-Americans dispossessed Native Americans of their land in Northern Michigan and threw their kids into a "re-education school." I also discuss how Mission Point was established as a protestant mission, and the son of a protestant missionary became a U.S. Senator and successfully helped Mackinac Island become the second National Park in American history before it was later given back to the state. 0:00 Intro/Pre-Colonial History of Mackinac Island 6:53 Colonial History of Mission Point 8:10 The Beginnings of Mission Point 13:29 Henry Schoolcraft and The Treaty of Washington 17:13 Mid-19th Century History of Mission Point 19:10 Mackinac Island National Park 22:13 Late 19th Century History of Mission Point Sources- History of the Ottawa and Chippewa Indians of Michigan by Andrew Blackbird The Great Lakes Lore Podcast with Mackinac Island Historians Samantha Engel and Aaron Gulyas:    • The Haunting History of Mackinac Island   https://ouriowaheritage.com/our-iowa-... https://www.mpremployees.com/history.... https://www.mackinacisland.org/blog/p... https://nmu.edu/walking-together/amer... https://www.mackinacparks.com/blog/ho... https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/2... https://history.house.gov/HouseRecord... https://www.archives.gov/milestone-do...    • The Paranormal Secrets Of Mackinac Island ...   https://timesmachine.nytimes.com/time... https://michiganadvance.com/2022/05/2...
