Omihachiman (近江八幡): Canals, Ropeway & the Best Ramen I Had in Japan

近江八幡（Omihachiman）— 滋賀県の隠れた宝石、大阪から約1時間の小さな城下町。 A hidden gem in Shiga Prefecture — the small historic town of Omihachiman (近江八幡), about an hour from Osaka. I had no real plan for this day — just a train ticket and a rough idea that Omihachiman (近江八幡), a small town in Shiga Prefecture about an hour from Osaka, might be worth the detour. It turned out to be one of the best decisions of the whole trip. 駅近くのラーメン・餃子からスタート。本当に美味しくて思わず立ち止まりました。 I started with lunch at a tiny local spot near the station — ramen and gyoza that genuinely stopped me mid-bite. From there I walked through the old merchant town (近江八幡の商人街), took the Mount Hachiman Ropeway (八幡山ロープウェー) up for views over Lake Biwa (琵琶湖) with cherry blossoms all around, wandered through Zuiryuji Temple (瑞龍寺) where a very friendly cat seemed to own the place, and followed a stone path lined with red Torii gates back down the hill. The Hachiman-bori canals (八幡堀) in the late afternoon light made the whole thing feel almost unreal. 夕方は八幡堀の美しい景色を満喫。その後、大阪に戻りとんかつで締めくくりました。 Ended the day back in Osaka with a delicious tonkatsu dinner.
