Surgery is one of the most specialised fields of medicine. But in my view, to be a good surgeon, one must first be a good doctor. This is because surgery is only one part of the patient’s journey. What really matters is being able to make the correct diagnosis, determine which patients will genuinely benefit from surgery, and plan treatment from a holistic perspective. Particularly in fields such as pancreatic and liver surgery, it is not enough for a surgeon simply to know how to perform the operation. They must also understand oncology, gastroenterology, radiology, pathology and the biology of the disease. This is because every patient is different and every treatment plan is tailored to the individual. In this video, we discuss this perspective in a little more detail. What does it mean to be a surgeon? What is the difference between general medicine and surgery? Why is subspecialisation so important? Why is it not enough to view a patient solely from a surgical perspective? How has my understanding of medicine changed over the years?
