Dawn to Dusk | SSD | Bronze Butterflies

BB is excited to present this routine as our competitive debut! For Dawn to Dusk, we decided to create a visual and emotional representation for each time of day using choreography and music. Throughout the routine, we utilized symmetry to evoke the beauty of nature, carefully selected moves and formations to match the character of each time of day, and performed gait and move changes in time with the music, a soundtrack mixed by hand specifically for this routine. To guide our choreography, Sunrise/Sunset and Day/Night are conceptualized as opposite pairs while each section maintains its own character. Sunrise and Sunset are visually similar, with the Monarchs using independent curves to recall the ever-changing and swirling color of the sky, but where sunrise expands outwards to the edges of the arena, sunset brings the riders closer and closer until they disappear into the night. Day and Night, in contrast, have the riders in clear formations and use mostly individual moves and curl divisions. Fast-paced moves and quick formation changes convey the energy and excitement of daytime, and slow, simple movements in small, spread-out clusters are the twinkling of stars in the peace and quiet of the night. As a special touch, the routine opens with riders expanding from a circle, drawing out the sunrise, and just before Night begins, each rider cuts down their original path and enters the circle once more, going right towards the very spot they started in, literally riding Sunset as a sunrise in reverse. Additionally, did you catch the subtle shift in instrumentation in our soundtrack? Sunrise is done entirely with strings, Day and Sunset have a mix, and Night is done entirely with piano. Between lag, a crazy 4-week time limit, and having to rework choreography all the way through filming, it was a struggle to get this routine out, but we had so much fun and love how it turned out!
