Lecture, Misplaced Ontology: 道 is not "the Way" and 仁 is not "benevolence" by Roger T. Ames

Professor Roger T. Ames delivered this lecture at The 10th Hanese Philosophy Forum: Consciousness, Language, and Philosophy, held at Peking University from May 15 to 17, 2026. The forum brought together scholars from China and abroad to reflect on the development of Hanese Philosophy as a distinctive field of inquiry and philosophical paradigm. Since its emergence as a public field of discussion at Peking University in 2016, Hanese Philosophy has explored fundamental questions concerning the relationships between mind and language, language and philosophy, language and truth, and language and intelligence. In this lecture, Professor Ames offers his distinctive interpretation of "dao" (道) and "ren" (仁), showing how key concepts in Chinese philosophy can illuminate questions of language, relationality, human experience, and universal philosophical concern.
