HARROGATE PARISH #28: GOLDSBOROUGH Goldsborough – “Golda’s Fort” This week in Harrogate we’re in a place with a royal connection. Welcome to Goldsborough, an out of the way kind of place situated one mile south of the A59, close to the River Nidd. Although small by the standards of the modern village, Goldsborough is widely known. That’s because along its Southern edge, there stands an enormous stately home, lived in, during its time, by several notable people. It remains a private family home today, but its rich history is more than enough to attract visitors like me! Part of the old West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974, Goldsborough literally means “Golda’s Fort”. It appeared in the Domesday Book as Golburg or Goldeburgh and was in the possession of the de Goldesburgh, Hutton and Byerley families at that time. The village would later become the seat of the short-lived Wytham Baronetcy during the 1680s. The hall has always been the centre of attention here, but Goldsborough can boast a bit more than that. Here, there’s a school, a pub, a cricket club and a fine church with an awesome interior. The village used to have a railway station as well, near the A59. And Goldsborough is growing. Brand new housing estates are being constructed along its Northern fringes.
