FLAXBY: Harrogate Parish #29 of 139

HARROGATE PARISH #29: FLAXBY Flaxby – “Flat’s Farmstead” To end this current run of parishes to the Southeast of Harrogate, today we come to Flaxby, located very close to the A1(M) motorway and just North of the A59. Flaxby, which was recorded in the Domesday Book as both Flasbie and the modern Flaxby, has always been a small, rural village with farming at its heart, although it is considerably larger than it was back in the 1870s. At that time it was described in Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales as covering some 580 acres and having only 19 houses. Most of those 19 properties have disappeared, replaced with new ones, and several more besides. Even so, there are still only 46, and they’re mostly modern. They are all strung out along two narrow country lanes – Shortsill Lane between Flaxby and Coneythorpe, and York Road which connects the village to Allerton. Property to the East of York Road used to be owned by the Allerton Estate, whilst property on the western side belonged to Goldsborough. Today, the parish boundaries still reflect this split – and we’ll talk about that as we venture through the place. With only housing and no amenities, Flaxby relies heavily on its neighbours for just about everything. Mind you being so close to the A1 is a massive advantage!
