1. God is Holy Trinity. The divinity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—one God in three distinctive Persons, co-creators, eternal, and equal in divine nature (Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 28:19). A. The God Elohim as the Creator: In the beginning before anything was created, God—called Elohim in Hebrew—created the heavens and the earth. The word Elohim is a plural term; gods in the ordinary meaning. Commonly, used in the Bible for the article of the Supreme God. Occasionally, used in the Bible for judges, idols, and angels. In the context of Genesis 1:1, Elohim specifically refers to the Most High God as the Creator of all things. According to Psalm 33:6, God created the heavens and the earth through His Word and Breath—symbolizing the Son and the Spirit of God. We understand that the Lord Jesus was very involved in creation, as stated in John 1:1–3, where Jesus is referred to as the Word of God, and all things were made through Him; nothing was made without Him (also affirmed in Colossians 1:16).The Holy Spirit, described as the breath of God, gave life when the earth was still formless and empty(Genesis 1:2) He gave life to mankind (Job 33:4; Genesis 2:7). B. The God Elohim as the Eternal: The Hebrew word Elohim also written in Deuteronomy 6:4: “Listen, O Israel: The LORD our God (Elohim) is one LORD.” The word LORD is translated from the Tetragrammaton “YHWH”, the personal name of God revealed to Israel, may pronounced as Jehovah or Yahweh—the eternal God without beginning or end. The eternal nature of God is seen in the Father, the Son, and the Spirit (Psalm 90:2; Micah 5:2; John 1:1; Hebrews 9:14). The plural name Elohim, with the personal name YHWH, refers to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19; Matthew 3:16–17; Isaiah 48:16)—is one LORD. C. The Biblical Oneness of Three Distinctive Persons: The word one in Deuteronomy 6:4 is translated from the Hebrew Echad, which denotes unity among distinct persons—like a husband and wife becoming “one” (Genesis 2:24). D. The Biblical Analogy of Unity in Diversity of Christians with God: In the New Testament (John 17:11, 21), the unity of the Father and the Son as God is likened to the unity of believers, who are the body and bride of Christ. We become one with God in a different form of personhood—as adopted children, not natural-born. E. The Biblical Affirmation in the Divinity of the Trinity: 1) The Father is God (John 8:41–42). 2) The Son is called God (Isaiah 9:6; Hebrews 1:5,8). Jesus declared in John 8:58 that He is the “I AM”—the name of God revealed to Moses at the burning bush on Mount Horeb (Exodus 3:14). Jesus is the one and only begotten Son of God—having the likeness of the divine nature of the Father (John 1:1–2, 14, 18). He left his heavenly glory and incarnated through a miraculous birth of a virgin woman (Galatian 4:4; Luke 1:26-35). He is the promise Savior, which is Christ the Lord (Matthew 1:20-23; Luke 2: 10-11). Jesus is the only Name and Way given under heaven to mankind by which we may receive eternal life (Acts 4:12; John 14:6). He is the one and only Mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 10:20–22; Hebrews 7:25; John 14:6, 14). 3) The Spirit is recognized as God (Acts 5:3–4). God is a Spirit (John 4:24), and the Lord is that Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:17). The third Person of the Holy Trinity. The Holy Spirit is another Comforter, like the nature of the Son of God (John 14:16, 26), who proceeds from the Father and is sent in the name of the Son (John 15:26). He is not merely the power of God—He is a Person, the Spirit of God and the Spirit of Christ (Romans 8:9). The Holy Spirit regenerates sinful believers (John 3:3–8; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23) to become children of God (John 1:12–13; Galatians 3:26), and baptizes them into one Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13). He seals and indwells the believers of the Lord Jesus Christ (Ephesians 4:30; Ephesians 1:13–14), and teaches them the things of God (John 14:16–17, 26; 1 Corinthians 2:10–13). He guides us in all truth and give glory to the Son (John 16:13-14). The Holy Spirit produce fruit in us (Galatians 5:22-23) and gives spiritual gifts according to His will (1 Corinthians 12:4, 11-12), to equip and strengthen the Body of Christ until we all come in the unity of faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God (Ephesians 4:11–13). F. The True Worship and Prayer: We pray to God—the Father—in the name and through the Son, with the help of the Spirit (Matthew 6:9; John 14:14; Ephesians 6:18; 1 Corinthians 14:15; Romans 8:26). God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth (John 4:24; John 14:6–7; 1 John 5:20). Our worship must be according to God’s Word and Covenant. Worship is reserved for God alone—not for idols such as angels or humans (Revelation 22:8–9; Acts 10:25–26). We do not create or use relics, carved images or objects to bow down to or worship (Exodus 20:3–5; Acts 17:29–30).
