Brushless ROV Thruster Test #1
Thruster Assembly/Explanation here: • Brushless ROV Thruster Design Explanation ... Full Power Thruster Test: • Brushless ROV Thruster Test #2 -- Current ... Force Test: • ROV Thruster Full Power Force Test This is the first test of my brushless ROV thruster. I decided on a brushless approach instead of using bilge pumps because brushless motors do not need to be waterproofed, and they are much more powerful. There is a of opinions on running brushless motor unwaterproofed, but I have decided to test it and see what happens. So far everything has worked great, and I have been rinsing the motor with distilled water after each test. It is possible, and probably very likely, that over time the bearing or other exposed metal will be corroded or rusted, but building a thruster housings is a update I hope to get to once I have the ROV completed. I looked at what other people were using for brushless thrusters, and I saw that OpenROV was using 800kv motors, so I looked for something similar on Hobbyking.com. I was going to get one of those, but they were on backorder, so I got the NTM Prop Drive 750kv. I looked on hobbyking for the propellers as well, and I was looking for something designed for a model boat that was not too expensive. I was also looking for something just a little bit wider than the motor for good water flow, so I got a 43mm. The 43mm propeller is designed for a 4mm shaft, but the propeller adapter on the motor has a M5 threaded shaft. I drilled the propeller out to 4.2mm(#19 English) and then tapped the propeller with a M5 tap. This way it threads onto the prop adapter shaft. I also added a drive dog which is a added measure of security that the propeller will not slip off. You can see a design explanation in the link above.
