Guntur ( CHILLI CAPITAL of INDIA ) Food Tour I Pulihara Dosa + Natu Kodi + Chitti Nethi Idli + Junnu
Guntur is a city that announces itself through flavour. Known as the chilli capital of India, it carries a bold culinary identity shaped by heat, depth and tradition. We set out to explore this vibrant food culture with our hosts Ratnakar and Sai, fellow food lovers who guided us through the streets and stories of the city. First, we went to Old Basha Hotel in Lalapet, a breakfast only spot that locals swear by. We tried their paratha with paya, where the flaky layered bread paired beautifully with the slow cooked trotters stew. Alongside, the khichdi felt simple and comforting, while the kebabs added a rich, meaty touch. It was a wholesome start to the day. Next, we headed to Maai Tiffin Center near Mastan Darga. Here we had dosa served with natu kodi kura, a country chicken curry that was packed with bold Andhra flavours. The combination felt rustic and deeply satisfying. After this, we visited the chilli yard at Chuttugunta, where Guntur’s identity truly comes alive. We learned about the two main types of chillies that make this region famous and watched women workers continue their work amidst the strong chilli aroma, which was both intense and eye opening. Next, we made our way to Marwadi Ghee Sweets in Patnam Bazar. Run by a Marwari owner, this place is known for its pure ghee sweets. From Mysore Pak to gulab jamun served with kalakand, along with pakam and kaju katli, every bite was rich and indulgent. After this, we visited Anwar Restaurant in Arundelpet. We tried ragi sangati with natu kodi, a combination rooted in parts of Andhra Pradesh. We also had a Muslim wedding style mutton biryani served with dalcha and gongura pachadi, which reflected a beautiful blend of cultures and flavours. Next, we stopped at The Art Kitchens in Lakshmipuram. Here we tasted gongura chicken pulao and gutti vankaya pulao, both showcasing how traditional ingredients can be presented in a more contemporary style, with raita balancing the meal. After this, we explored Bombay Sweets in Lakshmipuram, a place filled with a variety of snacks and sweets. We tried chekka pakodi, chegodi and chekkalu, along with junnu and avise ginjalu laddu. Each item brought a different texture and taste, highlighting the diversity of local treats. Next, we headed to Gatox Natural Ice Cream on Vidya Nagar Main Road, where we tried a rather unusual red chilli ice cream. It was a crazy flavour, but somehow it worked perfectly in a city known for its love of spice. After this, we visited Hanuman Tiffin Center in Brodipet, a very busy and popular spot. We had pulihora dosa, pulipongadalu and chitti nethi idli topped with ghee and karam podi. The place was full of energy and the food reflected everyday comfort with bold flavours. Finally, we ended our journey at Anil Soda Stall in Brodipet. Anil ji is known for his incredibly fast soda making skills, and we enjoyed a refreshing sugandhi soda to wrap up the experience. This journey gave us a deeper understanding of the city through its food and the people who keep these flavours alive. Watch the full video till the end.
