I Ate with Fishermen in Vizag Harbour! Rushikonda Tiffin Tour + Ending with Mutton Biryani 🍛🔥

Seafood is an integral part of Andhra cuisine. To understand this better, we visited the fishing harbour in Visakhapatnam. This harbour walk was thoughtfully curated by the East Coast Conservation Team, led by Pranav. The team works towards marine conservation, sustainable fishing practices, and creating awareness about protecting coastal and ocean ecosystems. They closely engage with fishing communities and promote responsible ways of interacting with the sea. We were joined by Mylapalli Anandrao, President of the Fish Export Union, who guided us through the harbour. We reached early in the morning when the harbour was already buzzing with life. Boats were docking after long hours at sea. Fishermen were unloading the fresh catch. There was constant movement everywhere. Women were at the center of the action. They were sorting, cleaning, and selling fish with great speed and confidence. The sounds of bargaining filled the air. Crates of fish were being moved quickly. We also stepped inside a fishing boat and saw how compact and basic the setup is. It gave us a real sense of how tough life is for fishing families who spend long hours at sea. We saw a wide variety of fresh seafood like Indian mackerel, golden threadfin bream, pink perch, croaker, silver belly, barracuda, prawns, silver pomfret, vanjaram, squid, and anchovies. Anandrao then took us to a small local eatery near the harbour. Here you can choose your fish and get it cooked fresh. We picked vanjaram and the lady at the eatery prepared a delicious chepala iguru for us. While the food was getting ready, we spoke to Pranav and understood more about their work and the importance of protecting marine life. We then enjoyed a simple meal of rice and freshly cooked fish. It was fresh, comforting, and deeply satisfying. After this, we visited Sampoorna NGO with Sunita. Sampoorna is a women-led organisation that works on issues of gender, health, education, and livelihoods. They focus on empowering women and young people through training, awareness programs, and community support systems. It was inspiring to see the work they are doing and the impact they are creating. In the evening, we headed to Rushikonda Beach for a food walk with our host Delfi. Rushikonda Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the city with clean shores and a lively food scene. We started at Sea Inn where we had a hearty mutton biryani served with rich mutton gravy. It was bold and full of flavour. Next we visited Konaseema Tiffins. Here we tried dibba roti which was crisp outside and soft inside. The ghee karam dosa was rich and spicy. The perugu vada was cooling and balanced the flavours well. The Mysore bonda was light and perfectly fried. At Kshatriya Vindu Restaurant, we had chitti muthyalu pulao. The small grain rice made the dish feel delicate and aromatic. At Amma Tiffins, we enjoyed egg dosa and chicken keema dosa. Both were filling and packed with flavour. We ended the trail at Rishi Valley Family Restaurant with a comforting bowl of curd rice. It was the perfect way to end a long and flavourful day. From the energy of the harbour to meaningful conversations and a vibrant beachside food trail, this journey gave us a deeper look into the food and life of Visakhapatnam.
