Summary: The story of "Atithi" (The Guest) follows Tarapada, a teenage boy of exceptional beauty and "divine" grace, whose heart is consumed by an insatiable wanderlust. Though he is the beloved fourth son of his family, he has spent his life repeatedly running away from home to join theatre groups, gymnastic teams, and wandering tribes, drawn by the "uncaring freedom of the unknown". The plot unfolds through several key stages: The Encounter and the Journey The Zamindar of Kathaliya, Motilal Babu, meets Tarapada during a boat trip with his family. Attracted by the boy's striking appearance and refined manners, Motilal Babu agrees to give him a lift to Nandigram. On theboat, Tarapada quickly endears himself to the family through his many skills—he cooks with expertise, rows the boat, and eventually mesmerizes them by singing the tale of "Kush and Lab" from the Ramayana. While Motilal and his wife, Annapurna, view him as the son they never had, their nine-year-old daughter, Charushashi, is consumed by jealousy and envy as she sees him usurping her parents' exclusive attention. Life in Kanthalia When the boat reaches Kanthalia, the family's home, Tarapada stays with them. He soon becomes the "gem" of the entire village, establishing bonds with everyone from children to shopkeepers with effortless ease. The dynamic between Tarapada and Charu remains tense and complex: The Broken Flute: When Charu discovers Tarapada has been friendly with her companion Sonamoni and even made her a flute, she ruthlessly breaks his own treasured flute in a fit of rage. English Education: Tarapada becomes fascinated by English picture books and begins studying under the village headmaster. Charu insists on learning as well, but primarily uses the study sessions to interrupt Tarapada and destroy his work out of spite, though she later experiences moments of deep remorse and asks for forgiveness. The Secret Marriage Proposal After two years pass, Charu reaches marriageable age (eleven). Motilal and Annapurna decide that Tarapada is the ideal husband for her, as it would allow them to keep their daughter in their home forever. They secretly arrange the marriage, even sending for Tarapada's mother and brothers to surprise him. The Final Departure As the wedding preparations intensify and the monsoon brings a surge of life and movement to the river, the call of the "unknown" returns to Tarapada. Seeing the boats heading toward the Rathyatra fair and feeling the "wheel of the world" turning, he realizes he cannot be bound by a "conspiracy of affection" or societal ties. On the night before his mother and brothers arrive, and before he can be tied down by marriage, Tarapada disappears in the darkness of a cloudy monsoon night, leaving the village and its people behind to rejoin the "unattached, indifferent mother earth".
