Connect wires without soldering using the nearly forgotten Western-Union splice: This 100-plus-year-old connection from the telegraph era still works today – with both solid conductors and stranded wire. Need to connect two wires but don’t have your toolbox with you? No problem. In this short video, I’ll show you a method that’s over 100 years old and lets you join two conductors without connectors, soldering, crimping, or screws: the Western-Union splice. This connection dates back to the telegraph era and was specifically developed for wires under tension, since the splice actually tightens as it is pulled – making it partially self-locking. Keep in mind, however, that a Western-Union splice without soldering is not considered a proper permanent solution and is not suitable for mains voltage. Instead, it should be treated as a temporary fix for signal lines or low-voltage applications – for example, repairing a broken bicycle light cable while you’re on the road. If the splice is soldered afterward, it becomes a permanent connection that is even documented in NASA’s wiring standard NASA-STD-8739.4.
