They found themselves outside the pale of official Christianity as early as the 5th century, rejected the decisions of the Council of Chalcedon, and became heretics for the Byzantine Empire. They later survived the Arab conquest, taxes, laws, exclusion from urban life, and gradual Islamization. But they did not disappear. This episode explores the structure of the Coptic tradition, why its origins go back to the first Christian schools of Alexandria, how desert monasteries became the main force of resistance, and why a language that begins with the ancient Egyptian "Khutkapt" still lives on in Egypt.
