The Red Army Faction (RAF) began as a group of young intellectuals, but ended with terrorist attacks, kidnappings and the bloody autumn of 1977. The German government also went all out in response, deciding on the most brutal crackdown on radicals in the history of the FRG: mass arrests, surveillance, special forces, isolation of leaders in Stammheim prison... But even in their cells, Baader, Meinhof and Ensslin continued to wage their war. Why did the German revolution turn into banal terror?
