Jerome. He was one of the great Church Fathers of the West. His influence on the further development of the Church and European culture cannot be overestimated. His life's journey took him from the Balkans via Rome and many other places to Bethlehem, where he could dedicate himself to his great life's work: the translation of the Bible into Latin, the dominant language of the West. This gift of Jerome to countless generations after him has a name: the Vulgate. The Holy Scriptures made understandable to the people. And yet, even for this important pioneer from the early days of the Church, light and shadow lay close together. This is the subject of two lectures entitled "Jerome and the Love of the Bible" (Part 1/2) and "Jerome and the Struggle for the Church" (Part 2/2). Prof. Dr. Dr. Roland Werner is a staff member at the Zinzendorf Institute in Marburg and teaches at the Evangelical University of Applied Sciences Tabor, also in Marburg.
