Was sucht ihr?
At the very beginning of the Gospel of John, Jesus poses a surprisingly direct question to those who follow him: “What are you looking for?” These are his very first words in this Gospel—and they are more relevant today than ever. The scene takes place on the banks of the Jordan River, where John the Baptist ministers. He is the first to recognize Jesus as the “Lamb of God”—a term with profound Old Testament significance. When the first disciples follow Jesus and want to know where he lives, something decisive happens: they stay with him. From this seemingly insignificant encounter grows a profound experience that turns their entire lives upside down and allows them to recognize who Jesus truly is. But what does our search look like today? What desires, goals, and longings drive us daily? What space do we give to dwelling in the presence of God in our often hectic everyday lives?
