"Black sabres" is a modern metaphor referring to brutal mercenaries, whom the wealthy nobility and magnates of the Republic of Poland used to enforce their interests. They operated under the cover of the law, often as armed bailiffs or private squads, carrying verdicts that were not always just - but always effective. In black armor, armed to the teeth, they were a tool of pressure, violence and intimidation against poorer neighbors or stubborn debtors. In the memory of posterity, they remained as a symbol of the ruthless power of the powerful - "black sabres" that spoke with the voice of the lord, not the tribunal.
