SOUTH KIRKBY AND MOORTHORPE: Wakefield Parish #28 of 30

The very name “Kirkby” derives from the old English word “Kirk” meaning church and the Old Norse “by” denoting village. Thus the word “Kirkby” means village with a church. For many centuries, both settlements here were simply farming villages until the start of the industrial revolution. This one has been twinned with Sprockhövel in the Ruhr Valley of Germany since 1981. This is why if you venture out of the town to the main A6201 road that runs to the North, you’ll notice it’s named Sprockhövel Way. Since that time the International Friendship Circles of both have organised an annual exchange visit. A lot of the land area here is taken up by the Langthwaite Grange Industrial Estate, situated off Langthwaite Road. A well established industrial area, this benefits from good transport links. The A638 Doncaster Road is only six minutes drive away, providing direct access to the A1(M) at Junction 38. Speaking of Langthwaite, there’s a stream here by the name of Langthwaite Beck and whilst it may not be the most desirable feature of the town, it is important, marking the boundary between this and South Elmsall. It runs for a length of 3.22 km. I found the path close by to it to be fairly interesting all in itself for a few reasons.
