The Geneva Double Curtain is one of the most productive grape trellis systems used in commercial vineyards—but until now, it hasn't been very practical for the ordinary backyard. In this step-by-step tutorial, I'll show you how to build a Geneva Double Curtain grape trellis adapted specifically for a single backyard grapevine. We'll discuss why commercial vineyards developed this divided high-wire training system, why it's especially well suited for vigorous grape varieties like Concord and Niagara, and then build the entire trellis from start to finish. One of the biggest challenges with adapting the Geneva Double Curtain to a backyard is supporting two fruiting wires out in the air without building an entire vineyard row. In this video, I'll also show you the custom steel crossbar bracket I designed to make this commercial vineyard system practical for a single standalone trellis. 00:00 The Geneva Double Curtain Trellis 00:55 Comparing Mid Wire & High Wire Systems 03:50 Why Do We Need the Geneva Double Curtain? 05:59 Problems That Arise in Small Spaces 06:51 The Solution: Custom Brackets 07:23 Preparing the Cross Bar Brackets 11:02 Installing Wood Posts 22:16 Mounting the Steel Rigid Bar 24:32 Attaching the Cross Bar Brackets 29:03 Mounting Hardware for Cables 30:47 Assembling Guide Wire Cables 32:58 Assembling High Wire Cables 34:37 Squaring Off & Tensioning the High Wires 36:41 What's Missing?
