This Train Ride Was a Colorado Bucket List Experience

🚂 Riding the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad | Steam Train, Silverton, and San Juan Mountains In this video, we take one of Colorado’s most iconic journeys aboard the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, traveling deep into the San Juan Mountains on a historic steam train. This legendary route has been running since the 1880s and follows the Animas River through towering canyons, rugged wilderness, and some of the most dramatic scenery in the state. We break down the different ways to ride including steam vs diesel, round trip by train, and train one way with a bus return. We also talk about booking tips, departure options, and what to expect on this full-day adventure. Once we arrive in Silverton, Colorado, a historic mining town sitting over 9,300 feet above sea level, we explore the streets and stop into the Lucy Rose Saloon inside the Grand Imperial Hotel, a building that dates back to 1882. It is the perfect spot to grab a bite or a drink during the train’s layover. We also cover some of the unique adventure options along the route, including wilderness access for backpackers, access to famous 14er routes near Chicago Basin, and the incredible Soaring Tree Top Adventures zipline, which is only reachable by train and sits deep in the forest with no road access.
