Solo Overlanding with an Alu-Cab Camper Tour and Off-grid Coms

Sometimes the best camps are the ones that remind you to slow down. I spent two days camping off-grid at Brown State Fishing Lake in northeast Kansas, setting up my Toyota Tundra and Alu-Cab Canopy Camper beside a beautiful field of water lilies while birds sang overhead. With temperatures in the low 80s and perfect camping weather, it was the ideal place to relax, explore, and enjoy amateur radio. During the trip I: • Gave a complete inside and outside tour of my overland setup. • Discussed the Alu-Cab Canopy Camper, roof tent, Victron battery system, suspension and brake upgrades, and what I like—and don't like—about the setup, especially for taller campers. • Captured quiet moments around camp that remind us why we head outdoors in the first place. • Played Radio - brought some fun toys for 6 meter coms. Not everything went exactly as planned. An unexpected visitor wandered into camp early one morning, creating an awkward moment that serves as a reminder to stay aware, even in peaceful places. If you enjoy overlanding, camping, Parks on the Air, amateur radio, and honest gear reviews, I hope you'll enjoy coming along on this adventure. 73, Brian – WQØA Overland Amateur Radio 00:00 Introduction 02:12 Setup campsite 05:30 Alu-Cab tour 24:20 Amateur radio station setup 36:00 6 meter radio play 39:58 Camp Dine'n & Vibe'n 47:38 Morning Visitor 49:17 Morning Routine 54:35 POTA activation 01:02:04 Evening Routine 01:05:06 Exhale & Relax 01:07:09 Final thoughts 6 meter Moxon Build: I got my inspiration and dimensions from this video.    • Moxon Antenna Build for 6 Meters   But the copper pipe hub was a no-go for me. It was not strong enough. So I custom built the hub with PVC and wood dowel reinforcement. It is a portable antenna concept. A permanent install in the sun would not fair well for PVC Pipe. Turned out well, though. Go make ya a Moxon! #overlanding #overlandKansas #offgrid #camping #amateurradio #alucab #tundra #dispersedcamping #sixmetermoxon
