Documentary: A migration agreement that makes lives worse
The “one in, one out” migration policy implemented by France and the United Kingdom is not saving lives. Migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, most of whom have no other alternative, continue to attempt to cross the English Channel in conditions that are extremely dangerous. Presented as a “legal and safe route,” this agreement establishes a cynical bargaining system involving human lives. People who arrive in the UK via the English Channel in makeshift boats are placed in detention and some are sent back to France. In “exchange,” the UK agrees to issue entry visas to migrants who have gone through an online admission platform, involving a series of extremely restrictive criteria that most people cannot meet. In addition, unaccompanied minors are excluded from the scheme, as are stateless persons. On the northern coast of France, people on the move are surviving in extremely poor conditions and their mental health is severely affected, as witnessed by the Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams who are supporting them. Far from deterring crossings of the English Channel, the “one in, one out” agreement establishes an inhumane system of detention in the UK and deportation to France which, like previous agreements, creates vulnerability and seriously endangers people on the move, with significant repercussions on their physical and mental health.
