Around 70 human rights groups have issued a joint statement urging the EU Parliament to reject the draft ‘Common European System for Returns’, warning it could normalise mass detentions, surveillance and racial profiling. The EU proposal underlines the rise in anti-immigrant sentiment across far-right European politics. Far-right parties Reform Party and the Belgian Vlaams Belang want to enforce ICE-style police units to tackle illegal immigration.
