Chiquinha Gonzaga: a revolucionária da música brasileira

Chiquinha Gonzaga was a Brazilian woman born in the 19th century who chose to follow her calling rather than conform to what society expected of her. Chiquinha was one of Brazil's great composers and the first woman to make a living from music in the country. In addition to composing and performing, she also conducted orchestras at a time when the word maestro did not even have a feminine form. She was one of the pioneers in bringing African rhythms played in the streets to theaters and social halls. All of this without losing sight of the social issues that were happening around her. She mixed the classical with the popular and was the first woman to write carnival and protest songs, and her compositions caused a political scandal. I'll tell you about this and much more in today's video.
