Historias Innecesarias: Tragedia de Armero

Just six days after the Palace of Justice siege, while Colombia was still reeling from the events, another tragedy—this time a natural one—was about to wipe an entire town off the map. On the night of November 13, 1985, the residents of Armero were getting ready for bed. The sky was overcast, it was drizzling, and no one imagined that more than 40 kilometers away, the Nevado del Ruiz volcano had just erupted. Minutes later, a flow of mud, rock, and ice would rush down the rivers at an inescapable speed. In less than half an hour, Armero—a town of more than 25,000 people—ceased to exist. And the most terrifying thing is that the tragedy had been predicted.
