On the night of December 19, 2001, in Argentina, a massive and spontaneous public protest erupted just as the president declared a state of siege. What was meant as a desperate measure to stop or halt a wave of looting already spreading across the entire country, ultimately ended up causing the exact opposite. It brought the middle class, now unable to make ends meet, together with savers the government kept from accessing their own deposits, along with those who, for a long time, had nothing to eat or had gone years without steady work. From that night on through the entire following day, the country entered a sequence broadcast live nationwide: Cacerolazos, a Plaza de Mayo overflowing, repression marked by unprecedented violence, dozens of people dead, and the resignation of the nation’s president.
