APOIOS | FUNÇÕES E CLASSIFICAÇÕES
HELLO!!! In today's video, you'll learn in detail about the abutments used in removable partial dentures (RPDs), their functions, and their classification. Abutments are one of the constituent elements of a RPD. If you're not familiar with all the elements, this link provides an overview of them. I suggest you watch it first so you can continue building this knowledge. Link: • PRÓTESE PARCIAL REMOVÍVEL | ELEMENTOS CONS... Abutments are structures responsible for the fixation and support of the denture. Fixation is the biomechanical characteristic that determines the seating position of the denture, preventing occlusocervical movements. This biomechanical function protects the soft tissues by preventing movement of the denture. When we refer to abutment, we're referring to the ability of the clasps to distribute forces to the supporting teeth. Abutments help direct force along the long axis of the tooth, allowing loads to be better dissipated. To ensure this support function, abutments must be rigid. Another function of abutments is to act as an indirect retainer, preventing tilting and rotation of the denture around the fulcrum line. They can also act as macro-support, readjusting the occlusal space. And they can act to close diastemas (interdental spaces), which helps protect the mucosa, preventing the effects of chewing impact. In addition to the abutment functions, abutments are also classified as: • Location: Incisal, under the cingulum, under the occlusal, and interdental • Surface: refers to the type of surface where the abutment is located Enamel, amalgam, or under a fixed prosthesis • Shape: Simple = when the preparation is made directly on the tooth, this preparation is generally shallower; Geometric = when the preparation is made over a fixed prosthesis Snap-in type = when it involves male-female fittings. And finally, another important point is the location of the abutments. In arches with free ends, the abutments are located opposite the prosthetic space. And in areas with intercalary prosthetic space, the abutments are located facing the prosthetic space. I really hope you enjoyed the video. If you did, don't forget to like this video.
