Train Simulator 2021 Smokebox Union Pacific Big Boy Short Tutorial! Starting & Stopping A 4000

READ: No in-video narration here, but a quick demonstration on proper starting and stopping technique for pretty much any steam locomotive. The consist is fairly light here, with only 15 passenger cars and the two auxiliary water cars; this, coupled with a self imposed speed restriction on the reverse curve between the two stations means the throttle is never more than about half open. To start, sound proper warning tone on the whistle, activate bell, open cylinder cocks, shove the reverse gear down into the corner, crack throttle and release brakes. Once the slack is stretched out, close cylinder cocks, notch the throttle up slightly until it starts to pick up the way you want it to, and begin hooking the reverse gear back towards center. If the wheels slip, close throttle rapidly to arrest slippage, apply sanders, and open throttle back up gently. Open throttle more as necessary, continuing to hook reverse gear up as speed increases. For cruising at moderate speed, 35% cutoff is the final target for the reverse gear. Once at the desired speed, if with light train, adjust throttle setting to maintain speed. If with full tonnage freight, it may be necessary to keep throttle full open and adjust reverse gear setting to control speed. When setting up for a speed reduction or a full stop, take an automatic service application of 6-8 lbs reduction and immediately bail the engine brake (independent). If throttle is only part open, there is no need to close it and set a drifting throttle; instead, keep it open to power brake (keep the slack stretched out). As speed decreases, progressively shove the reverse gear towards corner until at about 50% cutoff. Adjust service application as necessary, remembering to bail off the independent. Once speed is sufficiently low, under 5 mph or so, slowly shut the throttle. Once stopped, make a full service application on the automatic, apply full independent brake, close throttle completely if not already, open cylinder cocks, and center reverse gear. Finally, sound the whistle to indicate the locomotive is stopped with brakes applied and gear centered. Congratulations, you have successfully started and stopped a Big Boy, or any steam locomotive for that matter. Don't mind me as I also fire the locomotive while running it lol.
