Joseph goes down into a well, down into slavery, and down into prison. At what point does God show up? The answer is that God never left. In the ancient world, where you were and what you wore told everyone who you were. Joseph's story looks like total collapse, but God's assessment of Joseph never changed. And in each descent, something in Joseph's character was being shaped for what was coming.
