However, Chinese troops had already crossed the Yalu River and were being secretly deployed into the mountainous terrain. At Gunuri on the Western Front, the U.S. 2nd Division suffered heavy casualties from Chinese encirclement and ambushes, while at the Chosin Reservoir on the Eastern Front, the U.S. 1st and 7th Marine Divisions fought a desperate battle against Chinese forces in bitter cold temperatures of minus 30 degrees Celsius. U.S. forces withdrew to Hungnam via Hagaru-ri and Hwangchoryeong, evacuating troops and refugees on a large scale under naval air and artillery cover.
