◼︎ The Mt. Baekdu Boundary Monument was erected on June 18, 1712. Mt. Baekdu and the land of Gando beyond it are the source of our territorial awareness and stand at the center of the territorial dispute between Korea and China. The Mt. Baekdu Boundary Monument, erected at the foot of Mt. Baekdu in 1712 under the leadership of the Qing Dynasty, stipulated the border standard of "the Yalu River to the west and the Tumen River to the east." However, unlike the Yalu River, which had a clear boundary, the "Tumen River" to the east gave rise to massive conflict between the two countries. Joseon asserted that the Odobaekha River, the upper reaches of the Songhua River, was the Tumen River, thereby clearly establishing its sovereignty over Gando; in fact, administrative power extended to the region, with numerous Joseon subjects migrating there and registering households. On the other hand, the Qing Dynasty consistently insisted that the Tumen River was the Tumen River. In the 1880s, Joseon representative Yi Jun-ha made efforts to defend the territory by approaching border negotiations with a resolute attitude, risking his life. However, following the Eulsa Treaty of 1905, Japan ceded Gando to the Qing Dynasty by concluding the illegal Gando Agreement, excluding Joseon.
