Jesus interceeds for His disciples

John 17:1-11 contains the first portion of Jesus' "High Priestly Prayer," spoken just prior to His betrayal, arrest, and crucifixion. In this opening section of the prayer, Jesus reflects on the completion of His earthly mission and transitions from praying for His own glorification to interceding for the protection and unity of His immediate disciples. Core Themes & Key Verses The Request for Glorification (Verses 1-5): Jesus begins by declaring that "the hour has come". He asks the Father to glorify Him so that He may, in turn, glorify the Father. In John's Gospel, this "glory" is deeply tied to the self-giving love revealed through His upcoming suffering and crucifixion. Jesus notes that He has finished the work assigned to Him on earth and requests to return to the divine glory He shared with the Father before the creation of the world. The Definition of Eternal Life (Verse 3): Jesus explicitly defines eternal life not just as a future destination, but as an active, experiential relationship. He states, "And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent." Intercession for the Disciples (Verses 6-10): Jesus shifts His focus to the disciples whom the Father chose "out of the world" and entrusted to Him. He affirms that they have accepted His teachings, obeyed God's word, and truly believed in His divine mission. Jesus explicitly notes that He is praying specifically for these believers at this moment, rather than for the world at large. A Prayer for Divine Protection and Unity (Verse 11): Acknowledging that He is leaving the world to return to the Father—while His disciples must remain behind—Jesus asks for their safekeeping. He petitions, "Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name... so that they may be one as we are one."
