남북대치의 최전선, 연평도는 지금 어떤 모습일까, #Yeonpyung Island, From a Flashpoint of War to a Star of Tourism!"
On June 26th and 27th, I visited Yeonpyeongdo, known as the "powder keg of the West Sea" and the site of the most intense standoff between North and South Korea. Since moving to Incheon and designating this year as the "Year of Island Exploration in the Incheon Region," Yeonpyeongdo (Daeyeonpyeongdo) was the second island I visited, following my visit to Seungbongdo on June 1st. This trip held even deeper meaning for me, as it was arranged at the invitation of Commander Yoon Yong-ho of the Marine Corps Yeonpyeong Unit (then Company Commander of the Gyodongdo Marine Corps), whom I had urgently officiated at his wedding immediately after the "Yeonpyeong Island Shelling Incident" in November 2010. The Yeonpyeongdo I saw for the first time was a site of grim inter-Korean confrontation where tensions remain high 24 hours a day—a place where the interests of the two Koreas clash most acutely, and where the description "powder keg of the West Sea" fits perfectly. Amidst this, the dedication of the Marine Corps members safeguarding the peace of all citizens and the safety of the residents of Yeonpyeong Island was truly extraordinary, beyond words. Yeonpyeong Island is home to numerous security education facilities, such as the "Yeonpyeong Security Education Center," which preserves the site of the shelling during the 2010 Yeonpyeong Island shelling incident, and the "Sergeant Seo Jeong-woo Pine Tree." While serving as an optimal location for national security education, it is also a wonderful tourist destination, particularly during the summer, featuring historical sites and outstanding natural scenery. I hope that many people will visit Yeonpyeong Island this hot summer and be reminded once again of our security reality, where we can never let our guard down. I pay tribute to the hard work of Commander Yoon Yong-ho of the Yeonpyeong Unit and the approximately 1,600 Marine Corps members who defend Yeonpyeong Island.
