kururunfa Bunkai

Application work on one of the combinations in Kururunfa. This was filmed with the movements looking very similar to the kata. Later (off camera) we kept the principles but allowed the stances to be more free flowing. Kata was not designed for... "If opponent does X, you must do Y" as many applications suggest. In this case, especially in Japan, its often prescribed as, "If opponent puts you in a full-nelson, you do THIS move in kururunfa". Additionally, I also regularly see the 'Dragon drop' technique in Kururunfa displayed as a throw - one that does not adhere to the principles of throwing (talk to any Judo-ka). Cranking the neck, driving up through the neck, then dropping it straight down is not only more practical but makes more sense in the embusen of the technique. I've always be very adverse to this ideology. The kata draws inspiration from Dragon Style Gung fu, so its more about adhering to the ideologies of this style.
