Belém is the Lisbon district where the glories of Portugal's explorers and the Age of Discovery are immortalized! This video showcases Belém's riverside, where you can find many historic landmarks, such as the Belém Tower (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the Monument to the Discoveries. It was from Belém that many of the great Portuguese explorers embarked on their voyages: Prince Henrique the Navigator and the first overseas expedition, in 1415, to conquer Ceuta in Morocco. The first voyages of Fernão de Magalhães (Ferdinand Magellan), which led to the first circumnavigation of the Earth in the 1520s. Vasco da Gama, in 1497, to discover the first sea route to India.
