[Round Table] Coloniality in the City // 8 July 2024 // Universität Freiburg

In this roundtable on coloniality in the city we bring together perspectives from Germany, Iran, Colombia, Jordan, Turkey, South Africa & Brazil. We do not focus on the discussion of authoritarianism as denoting the political character of a particular regime or country. Instead, we highlight the way authoritarian practices exist or emerge within liberal democracies and connect with different forms of repression, silencing and persecution in autocratic settings. Together with international colleagues, we discuss how urban protests may serve as counterstrategies to a spreading wave of authoritarian tendencies across the world. What is comparable, where are the differences?
