[Public Lecture] We Have Never Been Postcolonial - Manuela Boatcă

Join us for a compelling public lecture by Manuela Boatcă, Professor at the University of Freiburg, titled "We Have Never Been Postcolonial: Notes on Theoretically Inconvenient Time(s)." Delivered in Marburg on October 16, 2024, this lecture addresses Stuart Hall's thought-provoking questions: “When was the Postcolonial?” and “What should be included and excluded from its frame?” Building on Sidney Mintz’s insight that “the world has now become a macrocosm of what the Caribbean region was in the 16th century,” Boatcă critiques the methodological, theoretical, and political frameworks that have historically (and artificially) isolated the Caribbean from Europe. She examines the Caribbean as part of the “forgotten Europes,” shedding light on its crucial role in shaping transnationalism, migration, and the racialized foundations of “Western” capitalism. Through this analysis, Boatcă expands on the compelling decolonial argument that modernity has always been—and remains—inseparably tied to coloniality. Drawing from the Caribbean’s deep historical connections with Europe and Africa, she concludes that the world has never truly been postcolonial and raising questions about how to study issues of time and temporality with regards to postcolonialism.
