It all began in 1995, when her brother Robert came across an ad for the "Moscow-Yalta-Transit" competition in the newspaper "Iz Ruk v Ruki." He used nail polish to cover the label on an old cassette tape containing a single Georgian song and sent the recording off at random. The jury selected the contestants blindly, based on their voices, unaware that the girl was blind. They invited her to Moscow, where the judges included Krutoy, Dolina, Laima, Malinin, and the man who would change her life, Igor Nikolaev. Just before going on stage, she burst into tears and wanted to run away, but her brother turned her around and said, "You came to compete against sighted people, so compete, and if you fall, I'll cover you with green paint." It was at that moment, she says, that her whole world unfolded before her. Five years of studying with the masters at Kalyanov's studio followed, along with her first music video, "Magic Glass," the big stage at Rossiya, and Madison Square Garden with Nikolaev. And in 1999, she released her super hit, "You Are Here," which she still calls her life's talisman. She was accused of treating her blindness as a PR scam, and memes are still made about her, but she didn't become embittered, didn't hide her resentment, and didn't stop hugging audiences backstage. Together with her husband, she built a charity foundation and the "White Cane" festival, where blind children share the stage with world-famous stars. They tried to bar her from the stage, doubted her, and laughed at her.
