ADG Episode 5 - Terminal Velocity
Episode Originally Released: June 19th, 2010 ------------------------------------------ Making this web show also gave me a good excuse to start getting some games I had wanted to get for quite some time but never got around to. Oddly enough, Terminal Velocity is probably one of those games with one of the largest gaps between the number of people who played it and the number of people who bought it, especially considering Fury3 (which is basically the same game just dressed differently) came out shortly afterwards for the then new Windows 95 operating system. Also had very steep RAM requirements for the highest graphical settings. ------------------------------------------ Additional Information and Corrections: It's more expensive to buy the game direct from 3D Realms now, so here's a link to the Terminal Velocity page on GOG where you can get the full game for $6: https://www.gog.com/game/terminal_vel... There's a couple things I forgot to mention. Firstly, this game has a "hi-res" texture mode which makes some of the textures look much more detailed, but it only affects SOME of the textures, not all of them, which can be a bit distracting in certain levels when there's a glaring difference between the two texture qualities. Secondly, shooting trees or other organic entities costs you points, which is actually more common in gaming than you might expect! I should make note that the real usefulness of all the weapons besides the PAC and RTL is to keep your PAC and RTL charged when they're low so you don't lose your quad-shot upgrades. Learning to destroy targets in the exact number of hits it should take and aiming very carefully will also make things substantially easier for you. The multiplayer mode cannot be played split-screen and must be played by linking systems together, usually with a modem or a network. Fortunately, DOSBox can take advantage of this. ;) An interesting piece of trivia: In one of the official graphics for the game you see the player's ship, the TV-202, firing red lasers, yet the RTL shoots magenta lasers and is the only "laser" weapon you get. One more piece of trivia: The stereo sound in this game is reversed. If you don't have a way of flipping it yourself to make it right you may want to switch the sound to Mono instead of Stereo. I flipped the sound channels for this review to make 'em right because I could. :) ------------------------------------------ Pixelmusement Website: http://www.pixelships.com ADG on Pixelmusement: http://www.pixelships.com/adg Alphabetical Index of ADG Episodes: http://www.pixelships.com/adg/index2....
