Alibaug Commune by Spasm Design Set amid the lush coastal landscape of Alibaug, Alibaug Commune by Spasm Design is a residential retreat that explores the relationship between architecture, community, and climate. Designed as a shared living environment for extended family and friends, the project reinterprets the idea of the traditional Indian courtyard home. Rather than creating a single enclosed residence, the architects developed a series of interconnected spaces that encourage gathering, conversation, and a relaxed communal lifestyle. At the heart of the project lies an expansive open courtyard that acts as the social core of the house. Surrounding this central space are a collection of semi-open rooms, shaded verandas, and sheltered pathways that blur the boundaries between interior and exterior. Large brick arches frame views of the surrounding greenery while also allowing breezes to pass freely through the structure, creating a naturally ventilated environment suited to the region’s tropical climate. Materiality plays a defining role in the architectural expression of the project. The building is constructed primarily from exposed brick, lending the structure a tactile and earthy character that resonates with its rural setting. The brickwork is carefully detailed to create rhythm and depth, while the vaulted forms and arches introduce a sense of monumentality without overwhelming the intimate scale of the spaces. Through its thoughtful use of form, material, and spatial organization, Alibaug Commune demonstrates how architecture can nurture both social interaction and environmental sensitivity.
