The European Central Bank is studying the creation of a "digital euro" for financial transactions in the European Union (EU). Inspired by the Pix model, the project seeks to reduce dependence on payment systems dominated by foreign companies and strengthen the bloc's monetary sovereignty. Amid Donald Trump's trade pressures on various economies, European authorities consider financial autonomy a strategic measure. Currently, almost two-thirds of card transactions in the eurozone are processed by companies based outside the EU. For European parliamentarians, this dependence shows that financial systems also represent a tool of economic power. Unlike Pix, which is an instant payment system, the digital euro will be an electronic currency issued by the European Central Bank. It is expected to be usable in physical stores, online purchases, and transfers between individuals, including between mobile phones. The European Union has already approved the criteria for the testing phase and defined the banks that will participate in the pilot project, scheduled to begin in 2027.
