In an interview with GloboNews Mais this Friday (17), the Vice-President of the Republic, Geraldo Alckmin, described as "unfair and unwarranted" the new surcharge of up to 37.5% that the United States plans to apply to Brazilian ethanol exports. Alckmin stressed that the US has a trade surplus with Brazil, accumulating more than 400 billion dollars in the last 15 years. According to the Vice-President, the Brazilian government will remain at the negotiating table to try to reduce this impact and support the affected sectors. Alckmin emphasized that Brazil defends the free market and the rules of the WTO (World Trade Organization), highlighting that the average Brazilian tariff for US products is only 3.1%, and that seven of the ten main items imported from the US enter the country with zero tariff. As a strategy to mitigate the effects of the tariff increase, the Brazilian government plans to intensify the search for new international markets.
