Maybe you think you know everything about fertilization: an egg cell and a sperm cell come together. But what exactly happens inside these cells? Structural biologist Miguel Leung from the Hubrecht Institute is trying to find out by examining these tiny cells under a microscope that is several meters tall. Because if you understand what happens inside, for example, the tail of a sperm cell, you can also unravel how infertility develops. And who knows, this unique glimpse inside the cell could even lead to new insights for fertility treatments. For his research, Miguel Leung won the Heineken Young Scientists Award.
