‘പൂവാലൻ അണ്ണാർക്കണ്ണൻ’ എന്നത് നമുക്ക് ഏറ്റവും ഇഷ്ടവും പരിചിതവുമായ മൃഗ വിശേഷണം ആണല്ലോ. വലിയ മാവിൻ ചുവട്ടിൽ കാറ്റ് വരാനും അണ്ണാറക്കണ്ണൻ വരാനും കാത്തിരുന്ന ബാല്യകാല ഓർമ്മകളുള്ളവരാണ് ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ വൃദ്ധരിൽ പലരും. ‘’അണ്ണാറക്കണ്ണാ തൊണ്ണൂറുവാലാ എനിക്കൊരു മാമ്പഴം തായോ’’ എന്ന് കെഞ്ചി ,അണ്ണാൻ കയറി നിന്ന് കടിച്ചു തിന്നുന്നതിനിടയിൽ ഞെട്ടടർന്ന് വീഴുന്ന മാങ്ങയ്ക്കായി കാത്തു നിന്ന ഓർമകൾ അയവിറക്കുന്നവർ! അണ്ണാന്മാരുടെ അഭിമാനമാണ് അവരുടെ രോമം നിറഞ്ഞ , വിതുർന്ന അലങ്കാരവാൽ. ചിലച്ച് ഒച്ചവെക്കുമ്പോൾ താളാത്മകമായി വാലും അതോടൊപ്പം കുലുക്കും. പരസ്പര ആശയകൈമാറ്റങ്ങൾക്ക് മാത്രമായല്ല ഭയന്നാൽ അപായ സൂചനകൾ നൽകാനും വാലിളക്കിയുള്ള ഡാൻസുകൾ സഹായിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. വാലാണ് അണ്ണാനെ അണ്ണാനാക്കുന്നത് എന്ന് പറയാം. രോമ സമൃദ്ധമായ വാലുള്ള എന്നർത്ഥം വരുന്ന പ്രാചീന ഗ്രീക്ക് ഭാഷയിലെ skiouros എന്ന പദത്തിൽ നിന്നും ഉണ്ടായതാണ് squirrel എന്ന പേര്. പല സഹായങ്ങളാണ് ഇവർക്ക് വാലുകൊണ്ടുള്ളത്. അണ്ണാന്റെ വാൽ മാഹാത്മ്യം ശരീരത്തിൽ കാണുന്ന രോമങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും വ്യത്യാസം ഉണ്ട് വാലിലെ രോമങ്ങൾക്ക്. ശരീരരോമങ്ങളിൽ കാണുന്ന കുഞ്ഞു ചുരുളൻ അടി രോമങ്ങളായ അണ്ടർ കോട്ട് രോമങ്ങൾ വാലിൽ ഇല്ല. എല്ലാം നീളമുള്ള മേൽ രോമങ്ങൾ മാത്രം. ഈ രോമങ്ങൾ എഴുന്നു പിടിപ്പിച്ച് ഉള്ളതിലധികം വലിപ്പം തോന്നിപ്പിക്കാൻ ഇവർക്ക് കഴിയും. വാൽ കൂടെ കൊണ്ട്നടക്കാവുന്ന ഒരു കമ്പിളി പുതപ്പ് പോലെ അണ്ണാനെ തണുപ്പിൽ സഹായിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. മഴയും വെയിലും കുറേശെ തടയുന്ന കുടയായും വാൽ രക്ഷിക്കും. തണുപ്പിൽ ചുരുണ്ട്കൂടി കിടന്ന ശേഷം വാലുകൊണ്ട് ഒരു സ്വയം പുതപ്പിക്കൽ ആണ് നടത്തുക. വാലിലെ രക്തക്കുഴലുകളിൽ കൂടുതൽ രക്തമൊഴുക്കി പുറത്ത് കൊടും ചൂട് ഉള്ളപ്പോൾ ശരീരം തണുപ്പിക്കാൻ ഇവർക്ക് പറ്റും. ഉയര മരച്ചില്ലകളിലൂടെ ഓടുന്നതിനിടയിൽ ബാലൻസ് തെറ്റി താഴെ വീഴാതെ കാക്കുന്നതും വാൽ തന്നെ. രോമം നിറഞ്ഞ വാൽ താഴോട്ടുള്ള ചാട്ടങ്ങളിൽ ഒരു പാരച്യൂട്ടുപോലെ പ്രവർത്തിച്ച് വേഗത നിയന്ത്രിക്കാനും നിലത്ത് തൊടുമ്പോഴുള്ള ആഘാതം കുറക്കാനും സഹായിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. വലിയ നീന്തൽകാരല്ലെങ്കിലും വെള്ളത്തിൽപ്പെട്ടാൽ നീന്താൻ ഇവരെ ഇതേ വാലുതന്നെ സഹായിക്കും The jungle palm squirrel, jungle striped squirrel, or Western Ghats squirrel (Funambulus tristriatus) is a species of rodent in the family Sciuridae which is endemic to India.
