Let's start at the beginning, because without this background, you don't understand all the fuss. When you buy a stock or ETF share via an app like Trade Republic, you place an order. This order is executed on a trading platform, or, to put it simply, on a stock exchange. And there you'll find so-called market makers, essentially intermediaries. They work like a used car dealer: they buy your car for €10,000 and sell it on for €10,500; the difference is their profit. And now for the part that few people know: these intermediaries paid low-cost brokers for years to ensure their customers' orders landed on their platform. This system is called "Payment for Order Flow," and it was one of the reasons why you could trade for €1, while traditional banks often charged €10, €20, or even more per purchase.
