DJENGKOL, A SILENT WITNESS TO THE BLOODY EVENTS (PKI) OF 1961 Djengkol was a sugarcane plantation left over from the Dutch East Indies government. After independence, this plantation area continued to be a source of controversy. Farm workers from the Indonesian Farmers' Front (BTI) and the Indonesian Women's Movement (Gerwani) sought to seize state-owned plantation land. Protests and bloody incidents erupted in the early 1960s.
