The unique Lake Pleshcheyevo and its surroundings and the ancient town of Pereslavl-Zalessky, one of the centres of formation of the Russian State, are a valuable natural and historical territory of national significance and a part of the natural and cultural heritage of our Motherland. The purpose of creation of the National Park "Lake Pleshcheyevo", its mission is preservation and restoration of the unique natural-historical complex near the town of Pereslavl-Zalessky and the pearl of the Upper Volga - Lake Pleshcheyevo with endemic population of the Pereslavl rotifer. The national park was founded in 1988 by the Decree of the Council of Ministers of RSFSR № 400 of 26.09.88 as Pereslavl' Natural-historical national park that was under jurisdiction of the Yaroslavskaya region Administration and functioned as its structural subdivision. In 1998 by the Resolution of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 777 of 17.07.1998 the Pereslavl Nature-historical national park was renamed into the national park "Lake Plesheevo" and was declared a specially protected natural area. Since 2000 the park was under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation. At the present time, it is subordinate to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation. The National Park "Lake Plescheyevo" is a nature protection, environmental education and research institution, whose territory includes natural complexes and objects of special ecological, historical and aesthetic value, and which are intended for use for nature protection, educational, scientific, cultural and recreational purposes, and for regulated tourism. The total area of the NP is 24149.11 ha, including the water fund - the water area of Lake Plescheyevo - 5098 ha. The area of lands of the forest fund is 16614 hectares, lands of extraneous land users without withdrawal of them from economic exploitation - 2047 hectares, dendrological garden named after S.F. Kharitonov on the area of 58 hectares. For preservation and restoration of unique natural, historical and cultural complexes around the national park, a conservation zone of the National Park "Lake Plescheyevo" was established by the Order of the Governor of the Yaroslavl Region of 14.08.2002 No. 551, and the Regulation on the Conservation Zone was elaborated and approved. At present, the protected area totals 58400 hectares. The whole catchment area of Lake Plescheyevo with the Berendeyevsky bog, the Polovetsko-Kupansky bog complex, and the town of Pereslavl-Zalessky are included in the protective zone of the national park. The ecological core of the national park is Lake Pleshcheyevo, one of the largest and most picturesque bodies of water in Central Russia, which by a number of geomorphological, hydrological, hydrochemical and other indicators has no analogues in the European territory of Russia. he flora of the national park (without an additional list) currently includes 752 species belonging to 95 families, 7 classes and 5 divisions, which is 72% of the flora of the Yaroslavl region. The main part of the flora of the national park consists of flowering plants represented by 526 dicotyledonous and 196 monocotyledonous species. Homopterous plants are represented by 5 species; vascular spore plants by 25 species (6 species of Plauniformes and horsetails each, 13 species of ferns). In the flora of the national park "Lake Plescheyevo" 123 species are protected, i.e. registered in the Red Data Book of the Yaroslavl oblast. 30 species (94% of the total number of protected species) are in need of protection. Of the protected species of the national park 10 are listed in the Red Data Book of the Russian Federation (2008) and have a federal rank of protection, which is 83% of species with a federal rank of protection in the regional Red Data Book. These are: lacustrine and woodruff, flexible naiad, Baltic and Traunsteiner's palmate, leafless nadoborod, cloverleaf neotiana, insectiferous orchid, true lady's slipper orchid and Flerov's borch.
